No, your details will not be passed to any sales or marketing organisation. However, our panel team may get in touch with you from time to time.
3. Will the Smartphone record my conversations?
No, the app does not record or store any audio. It only detects embedded signals added by the broadcaster, together with an acoustic fingerprint code generated by the audio detected by your device.
The MediaCell system
1. What is MediaCell?
MediaCell is an electronic audience measurement system that passively recognise the TV and radio stations you are listening to - meaning you don't need to fill in any diaries.
2. How can I un-install the app from my Smartphone?
For Android - follow the instructions HERE
For iPhone - follow the instructions HERE
3. How does the Smartphone know when I'm listening to the radio or watching TV?
The application on the Smartphone is constantly searching for the embedded codes and TV or Radio sounds, then decodes them when they are detected.
4. How will the Smartphone send my radio listening and TV watching information to you?
That information is sent back using the mobile phone network or WiFi.
5. If a Radio or TV signal has static, will the encoder still pick up the signal?
The general rule is that the Smartphone will mimic the human ear--therefore if you can hear the station, the Smartphone can "hear" the codes or broadcast.
6. Will I hear the embedded codes?
No, the special codes are inaudible.
Your smartphone
Should I use my smartphone differently than I normally would?

General questions
1. How often should I expect Ipsos to contact me?
The panel team may contact you from time to time to check you are not having any difficulties or to check some of the data we have received from your Smartphone.
2. How much data will the app consume?
The app should consume approximately 25MB per day. However, the system is optimised to use WiFi connections to upload the data as much as possible.
3. Why is the bar at the top of my iPhone orange or red?
This only appears on Apple iPhones, and signifies the MediaCell app is running correctly with the microphone. There is no cause for alarm if you see this. If you don't see the orange or red banner it means the app is not running correctly. Please open the app by tapping on the icon from the home screen, setting the timer and starting the timer.
4. Why am I not hearing a sound from my iPhone when I receive a text?
You may need to adjust your volume settings on the Apple iPhone to make the notification alerts audible.
5. Why am I getting an error message on my Android phone?
This message is displayed when MediaCell is unable to collect audio for an extended period. This is normally due to another application using the microphone. The easiest way to resolve this is to reboot your phone. You can also close any other app which may be using the microphone.
6. What incentive can I receive for my participation?
To thank you for being part of our panel, Ipsos will send you a regular reward of vouchers to a variety of high street shops.
7. How long will I stay on the MediaCell panel?
We would like you to stay with us for the full duration of the project, but you are free to leave whenever you wish. If you do decide to leave the panel, please notify us via: Email:support@uk.ipsosmediacell.com, Phone: 0808 238 5431 or SMS: 07507 302 115.
